Google has announced plans to launch an experiment that will make Internet access better and faster for everyone, and it may get a test run right here in Peoria, Illinois! In the past, Peoria has been a test market because our community is considered “Middle-America”. Good, old fashioned values, somewhat conservative community where people, businesses and organizations deserve a lot more credit then they are often given from the world at large. The old saying “If it will play in Peoria, it will play anywhere” encompasses more than just a Vaudeville act. They plan to test ultra-high speed broadband networks in one or more trial locations across the country and Peoria want to be one of them!
From now until March 26th, interested communities such as Peoria are providing information about their communities through a Request for information (RFI), which Google will use to determine where to build the network. The networks will deliver Internet speeds more than 100 times faster than what most Americans have access to today, over 1 gigabit per second, fiber-to-the-home connections. Google will offer service at a competitive price to at least 50,000 and potentially up to 500,000 people.
